Introducing “The NEED List!” Every Wednesday I’ll be introducing something else that the Haus of Guns crew is drooling over for our “NEED list.” What is a NEED list? Well all I’m really doing is replacing the word “WANT” with “NEED” and ranting about stuff that NEEDs to find its way into my collection. It may be guns, hunting gear, tactical gear, cool shooting trinkets and anything along the way I feel like I NEED.

So what’s first on the NEED List? How about something chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum? I’ve snuffed the round for several years constantly mouthing off about it never making it or having what it takes to stick around. Well guess what? With the time-tested and proven parent case of a .416 Rigby and the genius long range minds in Finland at the design helm, it’s a good thing I can’t predict the future because it’s here to stay. The .338 cal ballistic coefficient is outstanding and after seeing the Accuracy International AWM rifle accurately drive round after round at 750 and 1500 yards in the hands of every shooter on Top Shot 4, I’m really feeling the bug.

If you’re mucho unfamiliar with the .338 Lapua here’s the WIKI page with the skinny on this round.

Choosing which rifle is going to be a pickle. I like the Accuracy Internationals AND especially the new Desert Tactical HTI rifles which allow you to swap barrels and change calibers with a simple conversion kit and already employ a bullpup design making the overall length shorter. But in reality, I’ll probably be going with something a bit more budget conscious like the Savage 110 BA (one guess what “BA” stands for). And with a buddy getting ready to pony up the cash for a Desert Tac HTI in both .338 Lapua and .308 Winchester I can have the best of both worlds. :)

Regardless I’m getting the long range bug again, and with my personal range being extended to 700 meters, I’ll have the distance to stretch the legs out on a round like this. The timetable is uncertain, but I WILL be adding a .338 Lapua Magnum to my arsenal at some point!

For years I’ve dreamed of owning a 50bmg, but in all honesty this round has stolen my train of thought. I believe after I purchase my new deer rifle a .270 Winchester M70, something in 338Lupua will be next.

Can’t wait to see your thoughts if you ever get your hands on one.

Thanks again for the great blog.
