I love guns. I believe the past 16 months of gun reviews have demonstrated this without prejudice. I also love other toys… knives, backpacks, hatchets, and ESPECIALLY flashlights. Last fall we had the privilege of doing a full flashlight review for FenixOutfitters.com on their brand new PD32 flashlight package with the weapon mount. I put it on the AK and have since been using it as a general purpose light and LOVE it. Anyway, last week when I saw they had just announced via their Facebook page a brand new updated TK35 CREE LED flashlight that would put out 860 (EIGHT HUNDRED SIXTY) lumens max output with 4 CR123A lithium batteries I almost wet myself knowing I had to have one for review.

IN addition to toughness, Fenix lights have great design and aesthetic appeal.

Well, the awesome people (emphasis on awesome people, Oklahoma hospitality at its best) at FenixOutfitters.com came through and within a few days I had a brand new TK35 package in my hands. I quickly set out to start playing with it, learning the functions including strobe, four brightness settings and the memory feature that allows the light to be clicked back on with the setting that was enabled when it was last turned off.

We tested it by throwing it multiple times, dropping it at 1 (and 2 even though it says it’s not rated for it!) meter and throwing it from one meter’s height at distances from 15 to 30 feet with no adverse affect! No Guff, the video has proof. THEN we soaked it in a 1 quart mason jar and put it in the upright freezer overnight to freeze up nice and solid. Upon opening it up this morning I clicked it on to find it still worked… while fully frozen… still stuck fast to the ice and mason jar. Not only did the power function work flawlessly, but the strobe and other memory functions worked perfect too as if it was never abused.

The power button as well as mode selector button are easy to index and differentiate while keeping your eyes up ahead.

How bright is this light? Well I refer to it multiple times in the video as “its own little sun” and still feel that way 100%. The beam is rated at 340 meters distance and is overwhelming when shined in your face at 1/3 that distance which we tested a couple of nights ago. The strobe, or as my wife refers to it as “SEIZURE MODE” is so intense it’s almost as disorienting as a flash bang.

What would the purpose be? This is what I would call an overachieving utility light. Fenix claims it would be a great addition to cave exploration tools, camping gear and as a vehicle light and I couldn’t agree more. Additionally because of its power I’d say it would be an outstanding search light and if one were to craft a specialty mount would be a great addition to any night hunting rifle rig. It’s more of a flood light than a full on spot but because of the distance it achieves at it’s overall compact package and light weight would be a real asset. Not to mention the nylon holster that comes with it makes the light more readily available when fastened to the exterior of a pack rather than having to root around on the inside.

It's big, but not too big. The PD32 then my Kershaw RAM 1910 for reference.

Regardless of the application, this powerful little torch has proven to be one tough customer. And assuming the accidental abuse your light would receive is nowhere near the intentional torture we put ours through, should give you years of reliable use.

To by your own TK35 Bat signal, click this link to FenixOutfitters.com to make it happen!  The fine folks at FenixOutfitters.com will ship your order the same day provided you get it in before 2pm AND they’ll include some high quality batteries for your brand new light as well!

After being broken free from it's ice prison.

A little beat up, but still functioning like it's right out of the box!

How tough is your light?

Even with water pooled and frozen on top of the rear panel, both buttons responded and functioned flawlessly.

Fenix includes a carry case with all of their lights from what I understand.

One last pic while still in mint condition before getting pummeled on the street.

Great review Ebbs! The bit where you froze the light was wild. Looks like an extremely tough flashlight!

I need my own little sun!

  3. [...] advertises how tough it is as a selling point, that’s what we need to be testing (see Fenix TK35 Flashlight Review). So I personally tested the Starlight Pistol Case by tossing (not just dropping) it off the peak [...]
