In this, the third installment of Myth Busters, we address the terrible “assault weapon”!

In parts one and two, we talked about how my friend would eliminate private sales and have full registration on all guns. Today we look at his suggestion that we eliminate any “war like” weapon. I will address the term “war like”, with the assumption that he is referring to the scary “assault rifle”, the most common of which is the AR-15. But before I do….a few more facts. I know facts suck, but they kinda help us determine a logical outcome and foster a path to real success. First of all, the US Supreme Court has determined that it is that very group of weapon (war like) that are protected by the 2nd amendment (US v Miller 1939). Secondly, at one point in history, ALL types of guns have been used in war.

But again, that does not address the issue of reducing crime. So, would eliminating “war like” weapons serve to reduce crime? Well let’s look at which guns are actually used in crime. The most common caliber used in crime is the .38. And you know how many “war like” weapons come in that caliber? ZERO! Oh there might be some ops guy that carries a .38 on his ankle or inside his body armor as a back-up, but that hardly qualifies it as a “war like” weapon.

In fact, the top 10 calibers used in crimes are not even calibers that are that common in the military anyway. The 9mm is used as a sidearm, but not as often. And the caliber used the most by the military (5.56 for the AR/M16) doesn’t even hit the top 20 for use in crimes. In fact there is not a single rifle (Of ANY caliber) in the top ten. And the scary “assault rifle” accounts for less than 2% of all gun crime.

I think it’s safe to say that, while good intentioned, these proposals would do NOTHING to stop or even reduce the level of gun crime. Even eliminating “war like” weapons would just mean that the bad guy will just use a different gun. Again I have to ask, does anyone to think that if the AR had not been available to the most recent shooters, that they would have just thrown their hands in the air and stayed at home? “Darn I can’t commit this mass shooting because I don’t have an AR!” Just like with registration, the answer is painfully obvious.

The Virginia Tech shooter used handguns and killed 32 while wounding another 17. That’s more than ANY other shooting in American history. Unless of course you include ones perpetrated by the government like the one at wounded knee. Which coincidentally was done after the military disarmed the victims. Where was the second highest death toll? Sandy Hook. And he didn’t use the AR to kill a single person. He used handguns. How about the 3rd highest? Killeen Texas at 24. And again, handgun!!! Shall I continue? Myth Busters strikes again, strike three, gun control. YOU’RE OUTTA THERE!

But an ignorant Adams County cab driver in Denver this weekend thought that he was. Perazzi arrived, loaded several PACKAGED prototype shotguns into the cab and headed to the Denver Merchandise Mart where the fancy gun collector show was going on this weekend.

If the name Perazzi sounds familiar it’s because the man is president of the mucho fancy Italian shotgun firm named after him. Perazzi makes fine works of art for the skeet, trap and pheasant fields. We’re not even talking super killy self-defense assault shotguns here. These are over-under and side-by-side shotties primarily.

Even after Perazzi was released from custody with his lawyers present and his shotguns returned to him, he was apparently ordered to leave the state by nightfall. WHAT?!?!?!? Allegedly Perazzi went a step further and left the country, vowing to be back soon with a threat of pressing charges.

GOOD.

I’ve got too many fighting style rifles that have been running just iron-sights-only for far too long. I believe in iron sights. And I believe every rifle with an optic (more specifically a battery powered optic) should be equipped with a reliable if not at the very least a bare bones set of iron sights. Because of my delay the family’s proficiency with the irons has increased dramatically both up close and at distance. But I still love the red dot/reflex for its speed, visibility and parallax free ease of use.

The Primary Arms MD-06 riding scout style cowitness atop the Ultimak gas tube picatinny on my AK.

I own/have owned a plethora of budget red dots. Right now the Windham wears the Sightmark version of an Aimpoint M-series red dot and their Ultra Shot Pro Spec EoTech style reflex sight. Sub $100 and Sub $300. The Bushnell TRS-25 as seen reviewed on the GunMartBlog? Sub $90. Then Monderno reviewed the Vortex SPARC in the $210 price range and I picked up one of those too. I could have easily gotten one for less just 6 months ago but I hesitated. And of course don’t forget the Primary Arms MD-06 (removable base) and MD-07 RDS’s I’m getting to know at the moment. Each falling at the $100 or less mark when you can find them. My old Smith & Wesson 22A wore a Bushnell Holosight on the top rail for the longest time, but sadly both left in a trade for a Mauser k98 project rifle chambered in .270 Winchester. Ask me which one I wish I still had.

The question is with all the many RDS systems listed above I could have bought probably one Trijicon SRS, or maybe a couple Aimpoint T-1 or H-1 or even a Comp M2 and an entry level EoTech at this point. But I haven’t. The truth is most of the things you see reviewed on Haus of Guns are paid for by my own meager gun allowance and crummy ad money. Same for ammo. Same for fuel to drive and travel to events. Things get expensive and I have a family. Also, I’m making excuses.

Are Aimpoint battle rifle optics the best? Probably. At least they seem like they should be for the cost. I’ve only ever had experience with a beat up Comp M4 and a T-1 Micro. And it was brief, but I didn’t bang it around on concrete or submerse it under water. If I bought it you’d better believe I’m going to baby it rather than destroy it for you guys!

Which brings me to my point. Accidents can happen and things can fail and get busted to smithereens. But I’m not an operator, a seal, a Marine Force RECON, Scout Sniper, Ranger, Delta Force, blah, blah, blah. I am a civilian rifleman at best. That means I won’t put my guns through any more abuse than bugging out (God forbid) or having them beat around with tree branches or brush in the back country. And so far my budget non-magnified optics have performed up to par with no complaints aside from the clarity, battery life and red dot precision being inferior to the big boys.

The previous statement always seems to bring up the following statement… And if they fail? What then, Eric? Say the battery goes out on any of the above regardless of name, glass, reputation. They all become just a glorified metal tube adding weight to my rifle.

Don’t worry folks. I’ve got this… I’m a rocket scientist with iron sights.

A few weeks ago we received horrific news that a 5 year old boy had accidentally killed his 2 year old baby sister when he shot her in the chest with his .22 Rimfire Crickett youth rifle. Awful. I hate even thinking about it again.

Now a couple of things need to be made clear here. First of all, yes Keystone Arms builds and markets the Davey Crickett Rifle specifically for smaller shooters. I.E… Children. Second, the parents of this little boy were off the charts careless and ignorant when they left a LOADED FIREARM in the corner of the boy’s room within his immediate grasp. STUPID. FOOLISH. ARROGANT. The list of adjectives to describe mom & dad in this situation go on and on. Do I feel terrible for them? Yes. Is their negligence inexcusable? Yes. Does it hurt responsible gun owners worldwide? Yes.

Enter the YouTube debate. My oldest daughter just happens to have the exact rifle that this little boy killed his sister with. Meaning she’s got the same model Crickett. No the boy’s rifle probably wasn’t pink and no it wasn’t her gun, just one like it. YouTubers seem to have a hard time differentiating the fact that the video review I have posted with my daughter is intended to demonstrate PROPER, safe handling and instruction of firearms around children.

Within hours of the news hitting about what kind of rifle was used, some Euro-news feeds picked up my YouTube video as an example of how careless we Americans are and started showing it all across the continent. Then came the haters, the naysayers, the condescending intellects, most of which were French with an overwhelming aura of superiority.

So if I’ve seemed a little sparse on Haus of Guns here lately, it’s been because I’ve been defending the honor of American gun owners to those whose primary recent history is their propensity for being invaded by foreign armies (France, Belgium, England and Hungary).

Several have told me I shouldn’t waste my time. That the arguments won’t go anywhere and that I won’t change anyone’s mind. Which very well could be true. BUT the possibility of someone here in the U.S. reading comments or watching the video and being on the fence about what the 2nd Amendment means or what our rights are is enough reason for me to stoke the fires of 2A apologetics.

Within a week, the video climbed from 14k views (in almost 2 years) to 40k+ and from 20 something comments to over 430. Now those comments include my replies. But you can imagine just how busy communicating with ignorance has kept me.

My encouragement would be this: Don’t shy away from or discount an argument simply because you don’t think it will have any affect on the provocateur. Even if your opponent refuses to open their mind or even admit fault, there will be those around him who are still on the fence or are unsure that may see your use of logic and reason as an opportunity to give guns a try.

The trigger on the Kel-Tec SU-16C I am reviewing right now is an interesting animal. Well I mean the whole gun itself, it’s an interesting animal too. But honestly the trigger, I can’t get it out of my head.

This is how she came. In a box no doubt intended to fit each member of the SU-16 family. I respect the frugality of it.

First off I should say my initial impression (as in open box, assembled, less than 100 rounds fired) of the rifle is strong. The design seems to be pretty well done as is the overall rigid feel to a rifle that could easily be designed as a “truck gun” or a “TEOTWAWKI” bugout type rifle. The rear takedown pin can be removed and the overall length of the rifle will literally be cut in half. Keep it together and the forward under folding stock option still cuts off more than 1/3 the length.

Okay, okay back to the trigger. It’s the weirdest thing. I like it and hate it at the same time. Almost similarly to the trigger on the Kel-Tec PF9 in fact but not entirely the same. The trigger on the SU-16C is terrible and wonderful. The pull weight on it is probably close to 8 pounds give or take a few ounces, BUT, and I mean a big BUT, the take up is almost undetectable and the reset is crazy short. This means the potential for speed and safety are great while accuracy could suffer a little.

But should I be that concerned? Of all the folks who own one the one thing I have not heard any of them tout is the rifle’s accuracy, so I am ready to be surprised. I’ll be testing accuracy at 50 yards. If it surprises me we’ll back it up to 100 or so.

The trigger may not aid in accuracy. But I’m crossing my fingers that this Effin-A muzzle brake from Ares Armor will be just what the doctor ordered.

That title is a really crude to say the new 1″ Leupold Quick Release Weaver rings in matte finish and medium height. Leupold sent me a pair of these bad boys to run with the new Redfield Battlezone .223/.308 scope I’m running with the Mossberg MVP in 5.56. Gotta love it when an optics company sends quality mounts for their product (see Nikon P-22 Scope).

The steel rings are compact but heavy for their size. Being intended for Weaver means they fit Weaver rails tight but do a little sliding front to back in a Picatinny rail. I’ve found that if I set them in and slide all the way forward they clamp well enough to hold without losing zero. With a light recoiling round like the 5.56 I’ve found no loss in zero even with several hundred rounds, removal and reattachment.

Leupold QRW rings are different from other quick detach mounts in that the adjustable levers serve as a torque head of sorts for the torx screws (which also have a head if you prefer using a fat wrench or similar) allowing the user to tighten them with several full turns rather than a half turn quick detach or a lever with a “clamp & close” feature locking it in. These essentially operate like a standard set of rings, but with the lever to adjust by hand instead of using a torx head driver.

The adjustment levers are also capable of being “indexed” when the appropriate tightness has been achieved. Simply pull them away from the base of the ring and turn. The levers will be freed from their lock with the adjustment screws and move with ease. Think Warne Maxima QD adjustment lever if you’re familiar with those.

It may not be as lightning fast as the one turn quick release mounts, but it’s also the reason these Leupold rings come in at a respectable $60 retail compared to double or [close to] triple for your fancy QD mounts.

Is Ebbs a genius?

Is this what we’ve been preaching all along?

Well an obvious answer to the above 3 questions is YES. I was flipping through one of my favorite gun site/blogs at ArmsVault.com and saw that they shared the Department of Justice’s recently published findings regarding crime, gun related crime and violent crime.

And guess what? We’ve been right all along. More Guns mean Less Crime. Turns out bad guys do less bad things when cops aren’t the only people they have to worry about putting a bullet in their brain pan. But you knew this. Because you read Haus of Guns and that makes you awesome.

So everything Bloomberg and the Obama administration has been telling us is wrong. The emotion based legislation that has passed in New York, Connecticut, Colorado, Maryland and more will do nothing but prevent constitution loving Americans from making these crime rates continue to drop.

Get your gun. Train with your gun. Carry your gun. Shoot your gun. And don’t be ashamed of your gun[s]. Turns out the constitution writing forefathers knew what they were talking about. But that won’t make those afraid or with a lack of understanding stop trying to take them away. Keep preaching. Keep educating. And keep buying.

Until then. Molon Labe.

Many of you have undoubtedly seen the startup projects several companies now are running for 80% AR-15 receivers.

No? A machine shop or forge will get prints for AR-15 lower receivers and run them through their machines until they are 80% complete. Basically leaving one of the most time consuming parts for the end user. Because all of the tedious work is taken out, the receivers can be sold for half of what a typical lower receiver would sell for before the panic. Then the buyer picks up a finish jig to “mill” out the rest of their receiver with a drill press.

Upstart companies like Black Rifle Syndicate and Fealty Arms have found their beginnings through “crowd funding” projects on a site called RocketHub.com. Buyers make “donations” by placing orders for the products in advance. Because the price of the end product is such a good deal buy-in happens quick, the new company has the funds to start, and BOOM! If all goes to plan [i.e. the company has integrity] we’re back to arming the militia on a budget.

Allow me to introduce Resistance Arms Made in the USA AK-47 parts kits and rifles. Resistance Arms‘ startup is a similar story but different at the same time. Resistance Arms has its beginning in parts kits rather than 80% AR-15 receivers. Actually we’re not talking about AR parts at all. We’re talking AKs.

Relevant Question: What happens if the government gets froggy and decides to shut down import of not just firearms, but parts and accessories that are being shipped in from overseas? Ahem… All those AK parts kits that are so tough to get already as it is will dry up completely. This is where Resistance Arms come into play. Resistance will already be building 100% Made in the USA parts for your AK-47 builds. What’s a RA parts kit consist of? Here’s a list: [EDIT] Front & Rear Trunnions, Trigger, Hammer, Disconnector, Bolt, Bolt Carrier, Bolt Carrier Spring, Selector, Dust Cover, Trigger Guard, Magazine Latch and your choice of material: 1141, 4140, A-36, and ETD 150 fatigue proof (elevated temp drawn steel). Basically add a receiver, rivets, barrel & gas tube and your choice of furniture and you’re ready to rock.

From what I understand Made in the USA AK parts kits are just the beginning. After getting up and running the intention is to begin offering 100% MITUSA AK/AKM pattern rifles with CNC milled receivers. Not just assembled in the USA with a hodgepodge of parts. We’re talking a 100% Made in the USA AK-47 style rifle for a price so good you’ll want to slap your grandmother.

There are several early buy-in packages you can choose to be a part of the Resistance (see what I did there?). The price categories starting at “Freedom Fighter” not only puts you on the list to get one of the first ever MITUSA AK parts kits, but you’ll get it at $100 below cost. Essentially at dealer pricing. Want to save even more? Go in with some buddies and get a bigger package.

To sweeten the deal Resistance Arms already has t-shirts available from our friend Nick with FirearmApparel.com for certain package purchases and more swag is on the way. To sweeten things even further, Haus of Guns will be giving away one of the first MITUSA AK parts kits from Resistance when they reach their funding goal of $60,000. I’m so excited over this I’m nervous excited.

If you are easily offended, soft skinned or NOT open minded… please DO NOT read this.

Rob Pincus, one of United States’ foremost authorities on self defense including home and family protection during a break in said at this year’s NRA Annual Meetings that your best option for staging a “Counter Ambush” (his term) could be to store your home defense gun(s) in your child’s room.

The face of a monster.

Call him crazy, but the man makes a great deal of sense. If one of your primary objectives during a potential home invasion is to be sure that your children are safe and protected, keeping a defense firearm in a quick access gun vault or secure safe makes logical sense.

Rob is the founder and leader of I.C.E. Training and a hallmark on the Personal Defense Network as he travels the country heralding the responsible American’s need to prepare and train so that such dangerous incidents can be minimized and even avoided. The full context of what Pincus says in regards to the idea can be found on ICE Training’s website HERE.

The ever-sensible Paul Markel from Student of the Gun also weighs in with some rhetoric that really hits home with the HoG crew considering the battle we’ve been having with the “Guns Kill Children” crowd for the past week (more on that later). Markel States:

What we, the mature adult firearms owners, must understand is the reasoning behind this hysteria. The zombies see children not as the future of our nation that must be nurtured and taught right from wrong, good from bad. The other side views children as fragile creatures that must be protected from the world. Children, in the minds of the left, can be injured or ‘damaged’, not just by a firearm being discharged, but by a firearm being present. The very existence of firearms gives them night terrors and causes them to break out in a cold sweat. That an object made of steel, aluminum, wood or plastic might actually be in the general vicinity of someone under the age of 21, even when secured in a sturdy gun vault, is cause for alarm and panic.

Whether or not you follow through on Mr. Pincus’ advice or even agree with his premise, if you are a lawful gun owner who believes that a firearm is your best protection against evil you must understand the methodology of the enemy. The left-wing, liberal media and their emotionally-driven follows see ‘kids and guns’ as a negative. Those are two words that should never be used in the same sentence unless you are talking about keeping ‘kids’ safe from the dangers of ‘guns’. The left’s narrative is that the world would be a safe place if we would voluntarily surrender all of our firearms to a benevolent government ‘for the sake of the children’. In their world, children are not adults-in-training, but useful props to advance their agenda.

If you are logical enough to understand that simply having guns around children does not put them in danger nor does taking them shooting or training them at a young age, then you are likely to see the appropriateness of Rob’s advice. If however, you believe that it is a capital sin to simply have children in the same room as guns, then you will be in for a rude awakening. So don’t read it.

The Sig Sauer P238 is not a new pistol design. In fact the original model was unveiled at the 2009 SHOT Show in Vegas as a sort of redo on the classic Colt Mustang 380 pistol. And also undoubtably a response in part to the rabid popularity of the Kel-Tec P3AT and the Kel-Tec P3AT part 2, the Ruger LCP in the emerging class of micro pocket pistols. But I’ve never done an actual gun review on one. Despite having shot 4 different trim packages of the P238 over the past 4 years.

The P238 is anything but the LCP or P3AT. Though similar in stature, the Sig fills the hand just a little bit better and feels better too. It features a manual ambidextrous external safety, single action trigger, better accuracy, ACTUAL sights (Night Sights in the case of the Sig P238 Blackwood reviewed), is exponentially more accurate, has extended magazines readily available, weighs a little more, is easy to disassemble and is HIGHLY customizable. In comparison to the others anyway. As of 2012 there were approximately 17 variants of the Sig Sauer P238 pistol line. Basically 31 flavors dictated by your preference. Or 17 in this case.

Out of the box each of the few pistols I had extensive trigger time with have required an indefinite break-in with this model being no different. By indefinite I mean each pistol required a break-in before becoming 100% reliable, but with no real specific round count for said break-in to be finished. None of them requiring more than 2oo or so rounds to be deemed reliable, with one falling in around 50 and the other 100. This particular Sig P238 Blackwood experienced approximately 3 failures to eject in the first 50 rounds and zero failures of any kind in the subsequent 250+ rounds in the hands of 3 different shooters.

While I enjoy the way the P238 feels in the hand over other pocket pistols like the LCP, P3AT and even my beloved S&W Bodyguard, it still leaves a lot to be desired in size for easy manipulation. But I have man hands. My younger, tiny, bird-handed sister when holding the P238 in her hand would appear to be an equivalent to me taking a two handed grip on a Kimber Ultra CDP 1911. Okay maybe not that much, but it’s close. The max hold I can get even with the extended 7 round single stack magazines is two fingers comfortably. The grip extensions on these magazines give the mental impression that the shooter can take a full grip, but that just wan’t the case for me.

The very respectable single action (1911 style) trigger makes recoil management and accuracy easy even for a beginner or someone with so-so mechanics. While I wouldn’t consider the extra steps (manual safety) and nuances (hammer system) of a 1911 system to be something young and inexperience shooters or concealed carriers be subjected to, the ease of operation to be successful and accurate is something that sets the P238 apart from other micro pistols. In short, it serves as a better introduction AND carry gun.

At just 15 ounces unloaded the P238 can be a bit of a handful with defensive ammo, but not at all unmanageable. Being a more tightly wound system, the P238 has proven a major culprit when it comes to misfeeds and failures to feed and eject as a result of “limp-wristing”. A major catch 22 in terms of lack of mechanics as mentioned in the previous paragraph would be the gun’s ability to fall subject to failures as a result of poor form.

Whether right handed only or ambidextrous the safety functions well and is easily engaged regardless of the hammer’s position. Want hammer down, safety on, no round chambered (I call his the “what’s the point?” carry method)? It works. Want the hammer half cocked, safety on, round chambered? It works. Want to go cocked and locked like the P238′s big 1911 brothers? It works. Best of all it doesn’t stick out too far but is easy for the thumb to find and registers both on and off with a positive “CLICK”.

P238 series pistols are not a budget carry gun either. Please forgive me if I seem cynical or offer little surprise at this as it’s the same song and dance for most Sig pistols save for the SP2022. While it is a great design and well built, I personally have a hard time justifying a pocket pistol that weighs in with an MSRP just a couple hundred dollars under a classic and proven P226.

Is the Sig Sauer P238 micro compact 1911 style pistol the one for you? First, if you’re a Sig Snob (you know who you are) you’ve probably already got one. Because it’s priced too high and it’s a Sig. And that’s how you guys roll. Second, if you’re looking for a well made and reliable (with vetting) backup pistol or deep concealment primary and you’ve got the dough, it’ll be a great option for you. Finally, if you don’t have the money, aren’t sure if you can save for it and don’t otherwise shoot or carry 1911 pistols, you can do better than the Sig P238.

Other than that it is what it is. A solid, more reliable, well built and accurate improvement on the Colt Mustang (it even takes Mustang 380 magazines) with a decent trigger and excellent concealability while being at LEAST $100 over priced for the base model. All in all most people who have them love them or swear by them. Regardless of cost.
